Women's Top 25 roundup: No. 11 Kentucky hands No. 5 LSU first loss at buzzer

Tonie Morgan's 3-pointer at the buzzer capped her 24-point performance as No. 11 Kentucky handed No. 5 LSU its first loss of the season, 80-78, on Thursday in Baton Rouge, La.

Morgan methodically dribbled along the left wing, seeking an opening with Kentucky (14-1, 1-0 SEC) trailing by one in the closing seconds. She stepped back beyond the arc at the wing and fired just before the clock struck zeroes. The game-winning shot was Morgan's third made 3-pointer on three attempts and the finale to a 7-of-10 overall performance from the floor.

Morgan also dished 12 assists to power the Wildcats' offense. Teonni Key scored 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, while Clara Strack added 15 points and nine boards.

LSU (14-1, 0-1) came in having scored at least 87 points in all of its previous outings, but was held to 30-of-69 shooting (43.5%). Mikaylah Williams led the Tigers with 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

No. 2 Texas 89, Missouri 71

Madison Booker scored 28 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while Jordan Lee added 23 points as the Longhorns cruised past the Tigers in Columbia, Mo.

Texas (16-0, 1-0 SEC) rallied from a first-quarter deficit thanks in part to forcing 30 Missouri turnovers, which the Longhorns converted into 36 points. Four Texas players notched multiple steals, led by Rori Harmon's eight. Booker added four and Lee came up with three.

The Longhorns seized control in the third quarter thanks to a 17-4 run. Texas held Missouri without a field goal for more than four minutes overlapping with the pivotal third-quarter stretch.

The Tigers (12-4, 0-1) shot 12 of 19 from 3-point range, with leading scorers Grace Slaughter, Abbey Schreacke and Chloe Sotell each connecting on three. They finished with 20, 15 and 11 points, respectively.

No. 3 South Carolina 83, Alabama 57

The Gamecocks used an 11-1 run to close out the third quarter, ending the first-half threat issued from the Crimson Tide in the league opener for both teams in Columbia, S.C.

The Gamecocks (14-1, 1-0 SEC) held just a 40-34 halftime lead over a Crimson Tide team that came into Friday's matchup undefeated on the campaign. Diana Collins scored three of her 17 points on a buzzer-beating triple that capped an 8-0 run to end the half for Alabama (14-1, 0-1).

South Carolina overwhelmed the Tide in the third quarter and ran away over the course of the second half behind tenacious defense and balanced scoring. Joyce Edwards led four Gamecocks in double figures, finishing with 25 points.

Raven Johnson added 17 points, Madina Okot finished with 11 points and nine rebounds and Tessa Johnson chipped in 10 points for South Carolina.

Washington 64, No. 6 Michigan 52

Avery Howell scored 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and the Huskies overwhelmed the Wolverines defensively to win a Big Ten Conference matchup in Seattle.

Washington (12-2, 2-1) led nearly wire-to-wire, taking control in the second quarter when it held Michigan to just seven points. The Huskies surrendered only 18 total first-half points on the way to building a 20-point lead just after intermission.

The Wolverines (11-2, 2-1) posted 20-of-60 shooting (33.3%) from the floor, including 3 of 14 from 3-point range. Washington leveraged Michigan's shooting woes into a 43-27 advantage on the glass, led by Howell.

Michigan managed 27 points off 23 Huskies turnovers, but the visitors could not weather Washington's attacking of the rim. The Huskies moved the ball effectively, scoring 18 of their 22 made field goals off assists, and got to the foul line for 15 makes on 21 attempts to Michigan's 9-of-17 at the charity stripe.

Illinois 73, No. 7 Maryland 70

Berry Wallace scored 22 points, Cearah Parchment and Gretchen Dolan each netted 17 points and the Fighting Illini handed the Terrapins their first loss of the season in Champaign, Ill.

Illinois (13-1, 3-0 Big Ten) went on a 13-3 run midway through the fourth quarter, taking the lead for good in a back-and-forth league showdown. Dolan scored four straight Illini points in the final 2:37 to help keep Maryland at arm's length down the stretch.

Maryland (14-1, 2-1) could not overcome shooting just 1-of-12 from 3-point range and committing 18 turnovers, two of which came late on possessions when the Terps trailed by one point and had the opportunity to take the lead.

Yarden Garzon led Maryland with 17 points, but committed each of the Terps' late-game turnovers and shot 1-of-7 from beyond the arc. Saylor Poffenbarger scored 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished six assists in the loss.

No. 8 Oklahoma 72, Texas A&M 50

Aaliyah Chavez finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists, Raegan Beers posted a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double, and the Sooners rolled past the Aggies in both teams' SEC opener in College Station, Texas.

Oklahoma (13-1, 1-0) pulled away from Texas A&M with a 23-7 third quarter. The Sooners held the Aggies (7-3, 0-1) without a field goal for the entire third quarter and more than 12 minutes overall.

While holding Texas A&M to just 15-of-57 shooting from the floor, including 1-of-18 from 3-point range, the Sooners outrebounded the Aggies 63-35. All five Oklahoma starters grabbed at least four boards, including Payton Verhulst's 10 to go with nine points.

Ny'Ceara Pryor paced the Aggies with 20 points and six assists, while Fatmata Janneh contributed 14 points before fouling out.

No. 12 Vanderbilt 88, Arkansas 71

Mikayla Blakes matched her season high with 35 points, and the undefeated Commodores held the Razorbacks without a field goal for a pivotal second-quarter stretch that powered them to victory in Fayetteville, Ark.

Vanderbilt (14-0, 1-0 SEC) saw an early 11-point lead whittled down to five midway through the second quarter before shutting down the Razorbacks' offense during a 14-3 run. Arkansas (11-5) saw the deficit grow to as many as 26 points in the third quarter, struggling to slow Vanderbilt's trio of Blakes, Aubrey Galvan and Sacha Washington.

When Blakes was not scoring, she set the table for her teammates to the tune of eight assists. Galvan and Washington backed her up with 14 and 13 points -- Galvan scoring 12 of hers on 4-of-10 3-point shooting -- and Washington grabbed 13 rebounds.

Taleyah Jones led Arkansas with 24 points in the loss.

No. 13 Louisville 91, SMU 58

A 19-3 first-half run put the host Cardinals in control early, and they cruised to remain perfect in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

The crucial spurt, beginning in the first quarter, broke a 14-14 tie. Louisville (13-3, 3-0 ACC) went on to build a 19-point lead by halftime, deluging SMU with 27 second-quarter points.

Four Cardinals scored in double figures, led by Tajianna Roberts' 15 points. Imari Berry finished with 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench, fellow reserve Skylar Jones added 10 points and Elif Istanbulluoglu went for 11 points.

Reagan Bender scored all nine of her points off the bench on 3-of-3 3-point shooting, leading Louisville to a 9-of-27 performance from deep. Paulina Paris led all scorers with 20 points for SMU (7-8, 0-3).

No. 14 Iowa 86, No. 20 Nebraska 76

The Hawkeyes closed on a 16-6 run, pulling away from the Cornhuskers in a Big Ten showdown in Iowa City.

Iowa (12-2, 3-0) scored 10 unanswered points, holding Nebraska scoreless for 4:01. Chazadi Wright capped her team-high 24-point performance with six clutch free throws and a layup late to help put the game away.

The Hawkeyes also got a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds from Hannah Stuelke, 18 points and seven rebounds from Ava Heiden and nine points from Taylor McCabe.

Eighteen turnovers plagued Nebraska (12-2, 1-2) despite a game-high scoring performance from Britt Prince. Her 27 points set the pace, while Jessica Petrie added 17 points and Eliza Maupin went for a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double in the Huskers' second straight loss following a 12-0 start.

No. 15 Ole Miss 79, Georgia 62

Cotie McMahon went for 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Rebels over the Bulldogs in Oxford, Miss.

McMahon overcame just 1-of-7 shooting from 3-point range thanks in part to effectively getting to the foul line, scoring nine of her points on 11 free-throw attempts. Ole Miss (14-2, 1-0 SEC) went 24-of-28 from the charity stripe as a team, which combined with stout defense helped the Rebels pull away from previously undefeated Georgia (14-1, 0-1).

The Bulldogs shot 26-of-55 from the floor, but just 3-of-12 from long distance and 7-of-11 at the free-throw line. Ole Miss also forced Georgia into 16 turnovers, three of which came from Sira Thienou steals.

Georgia's Dani Carnegie matched McMahon with 24 points and eight rebounds, and Trinity Turner added 16 points, but Turner went 0-for-7 from beyond the arc. For Ole Miss, Latasha Lattimore scored 13 points, Christeen Iwuala had 12 points and seven rebounds, and Debreasha Powe and Kaitlin Peterson added 10 points apiece.

No. 16 North Carolina 71, Cal 55

Nyla Harris posted a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double and Indya Nivar went for 16 points and six assists as the Tar Heels returned to ACC play with a win over the Golden Bears in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Tar Heels (13-3, 2-1 ACC) jumped out of the gate, scoring the game's first nine points, before Cal responded with a 17-5 run to close the first quarter. The Golden Bears (9-6, 0-2) took a 34-32 lead into halftime before North Carolina ratcheted up its defensive intensity after the break.

A 12-2 run through the first half of the fourth quarter gave the Tar Heels breathing room down the stretch, and North Carolina forced Cal into 22 turnovers to disrupt the Golden Bears' offensive flow. Harris powered the defensive effort with five steals.

Sakima Walker led all scorers with 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Walker was the only Cal scorer to reach double figures.

Georgia Tech 95, No. 18 Notre Dame 90 (OT)

Double-doubles from Talayah Walker and Brianna Turnage led the Yellow Jackets to a stunning upset of Notre Dame in Atlanta.

Walker shot 10-of-17 from the floor and 12-of-14 at the foul line on the way to a career-high 33 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds -- six on the offensive end -- and doled out six assists for Georgia Tech (6-9, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). One of Walker's assists, finding Catherine Alben for a 3-pointer midway through the extra period, ignited the decisive, 9-0 run for the Yellow Jackets.

Turange added 13 rebounds and 10 assists, reserve Alben knocked down 4 of 9 3-point attempts on her way to 18 points and La'Nya Foster scored 22 points.

Hannah Hidalgo scored 26 points and passed for 10 assists for Notre Dame (10-3, 2-1), and Cassandre Prosper added 19 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

No. 23 Tennessee 76, Florida 65

A late 12-2 run separated the Lady Volunteers from the Gators in their Southeastern Conference opener in Knoxville, Tenn.

Zee Spearman posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Vols (9-3, 1-0 SEC), helping Tennessee to a 49-26 advantage on the glass. Janiah Barker came off the bench to lead the overwhelming rebounding edge, snaring 12 rebounds to go with her nine points.

Liv McGill exploded for 32 points to lead Florida (12-4, 0-1) and Jade Weathersby knocked down three 3-pointers on the way to 11 points off the bench. No other Gator scored more than eight points.

Tennessee, meanwhile, got 17 points and seven rebounds from Talaysia Cooper, Mia Pauldo added 10 points and Alyssa Latham had nine points and eight rebounds.

No. 24 Michigan State 80, Indiana 60

Grace VanSlooten's 18 points, 14 rebounds and four assists powered the Spartans to a dominant road win over the Big Ten foe Hoosiers in Bloomington, Ind.

The Spartans (13-1, 2-1 Big Ten) took control in the second half, going on a 15-6 run through the first six-plus minutes out of intermission. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Emma Shumate and Sara Sambolic capped the pivotal burst, part of an 8-of-17 performance from long range for Michigan State.

Jalyn Brown led the Spartans' long-range barrage, going 4-of-5 from beyond the arc on the way to a game-high 20 points. Shay Ciezki led Indiana (11-4, 0-3) with 16 points, but shot just 1-of-6 from long distance.

The Hoosiers went 6-of-22 from deep as a team.
